Join the IUGS Geoheritage Adventure: Grand Canyon
1-11 April 2024
Following upon its successful launch of the recognition of IUGS Geoheritage Sites with the "First 100" announced in October 2022, the IUGS Commission on Geoheritage has initiated the process to select the "Second 100". In addition, it has initiated a new endeavor - IUGS Geoheritage Adventures with the first such adventure being a raft trip down the Grand Canyon in April 2024. See attached announcement.

Support the IUGS Zumaia Declaration
On 28 October 2022, the International Union of Geological Sciences, during the celebration of its 60th anniversary event with more than 200 experts from 40 countries, adopted the IUGS Zumaia Declaration. This declaration has been supported by the main International organizations related to Earth Sciences and aims to emphasize the importance of 1) Considering Geological Sciences to face most of the global challenges now being faced, 2) supporting basic and collaborative research of the geological record and processes and 3) recognizing the geological heritage as part of the values that humanity must protect for future generations.

Earthquake M 7.8 of Nurdağı, Turkey - Message from the IUGS
The International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) sends its condolences to the families of the victims of the deadly earthquake that affected Turkey and the north of Syria, as well as other adjacent countries. Once more, nature sends a call on the importance of education on Geological Sciences to know and understand the activity in Earth, helping to prevent and spread awareness on natural hazards. IUGS wishes a full recovery to the injured and the full support to the affected countries.

The first 100 IUGS geological heritage sites
25-28 October 2022, Zumaia, Basque Coast UGGp, Spain
During its main 60th anniversary celebration, the IUGS is pleased to present the "First 100 IUGS Geological Heritage Sites" at an event in Zumaia, Basque Coast UGGp (Spain). This announcement will kick off an endeavor to designate geological sites from around the world that are iconic, recognized by all geoscience community for their impact in understanding the Earth and its history. More than 200 specialists from almost 40 nations and ten international organisations, are taking part in it. The First 100 aspires to be an unforgettable event that ends with a spectacular celebration.

The IUGS Earth Sciences Festival comprises eight unique geoscience events as well as the Earth Futures Film Festival and the IUGS First 100
Geoheritage Sites event in late October. Tickets are free and students are eligible for certificates of attendance to help with CPD.
