Scientific Outline and General Schedule:
The excursion will take place from 22 July to 2 August 2008.
Day 0: Arrive at Apatity from Murmansk by bus. Evening presentation on geology, mineralogy and mineral deposits of the Khibina and Lovozero massifs.
Day 1: Geology of the Khibina massif. A cross-section of the massif (9 hours, total length 110 km).
Stop 1. Contact zone of intrusion. Massive coarse-grained nepheline syenites (massive khibinites) of the peripheric part of the massif. Contact eudialite-bearing pegmatoid zone. Xenoliths of Proterozoic green schists in alkaline rocks. Fenites.
Stop 2. Trachytoid coarse-grained nepheline syenites (trachytoid khibinites) of the peripheric part of the massif. Eudialite-bearing nepheline syenites.
Stop 3. K-rich massive nepheline and kalsilite syenites ("rischorrites"). Tinguaite dike.
Stop 4. Apatite-titanite mineralization zone. Layering in the ijolite-melteigite complex.
Stop 5. Layering in the foidolite complex.
Stop 6. Nepheline syenites of the central part of the massif.
Day 2: The Khibina massif. Visit to the Koashva open pit (8 hours, 50 km of Apatity town).
Stop 1. Main types of apatite-nepheline ores, titanite-apatite ore, magmatic apatite breccia, massive juvite, pegmatite zones.
Stop 2. Sodalite-microcline-aegirine vein in urtite, Mt. Koashva.
Stop 3. Nepheline-sodalite-microcline-aegirine vein in urtite, Mt. Koashva (near the car).
Stop 4. Sodalite-microcline-aegirine vein in the contact zone of urtite and fine-grained nepheline syenite, Mt. Koashva (near the car).
Day 3: The Khibina massif. Visit to the Niorkpahk open pit. (8 hours, 50 km from Apatity town).
Stop 1. Brecciated apatite ores of the Niorkpahk deposit (near the car).
Stop 2. Dumps of the open pit: pegmatite and hydrothermal veins of the ore complex.
Stop 3. Stockwork of natrolite-albite and natrolite-pectolite-sodalite veins in urtite, Mt Niorkpakhk (near the car).
Stop 4. The eudialyte deposit at Mt. Niorkpakhk (near the car).
Day 4: The Khibina massif. Pegmatites and hydrothermalites within ijolite, rischorrite and foyaite at Mt. Eveslogchorr.
Stop 1. Nepheline-aegirine-microcline vein in rischorrite, Mt. Eveslogchorr (near the car).
Stop 2. Natrolite-albite-aegirine-microcline vein in gneissose foyaite, Mt. Eveslogchorr (about 1 km from the car, elevation 150 m).
Stop 3. Xenolith of aluminous hornfels in foyaite, Mt. Eveslogchorr (about 2 km from the car, elevation 200 m).
Stop 4. Astrophyllite deposit at Mt. Eveslogchorr (about 2 km from the car, elevation 400 m).
Day 5: The Khibina massif. Pegmatites and hydrothermalites within rischorrite at Mt. Marchenko. Apatite-titanite veinlets in rischorrite. Veins with ilmenite, zircon, lorenzenite, eudialyte, sodalite, ancylite-(La) (TL) etc. Length 2 km, elevation 400 m.
Day 6: The Khibina massif.
Stop 1. Phonolite dike.
Stop 2. Apatite-molibdenite-parakeldyshite locality.
Stop 3. Pegmatite veins with eudialite and aenigmatite.
Day 7: Geology and mineralization of the Lovozero massif (10 hours, 200 km from Apatity town).
Stop 1. Karnasurt mountain outcrops and open pits. Differentiation of lujavrite-foyaite-urtite complex: rhythmic layering. Loparite ore bearing layers. Eudialite lujavrites. Poikilitic sodalite syenites.
Stop 2. Alluaiv open pit. Pegmatite arfvedsonite-eudialyte-feldspar and arfvedsonite-ussingite-feldspar veins with ussingite, nepheline, murmanite, mangan-neptunite, chkalovite, bornemanite, gmelinite, and steenstrupine.
Stop 3. Old drill core storage in the Lovozero geological survey. Drill core of the eudilate lujavrite complex. Zr-Hf ores, containing up to 90% eudialite.
Day 8: Lovozero massif. Ussingite and natrolite veins within rocks of differentiated complex at Mts Alluaiv and Karnasurt. Loparite open pit at Mt. Karnasurt. Veins with karnasurtite (TL), nordite, berillite (TL), komarovite (TL), labuntsovite group minerals, murmanite, eudialyte etc. Length 1 km, elevation 100 m.
Day 9: Preparation of personal mineral collection for customs expertise: list of samples, photo of every sample, etc. Presence of participants during this procedure needed.
Day 10: Participants will have excursions to the Geological Institute, Museums and operating mines of apatite deposits in Khibiny while organizers will expertise and get permission for specimens at Murmansk customs.
Day 11: Departure from Apatity. Bus to the airport of Murmansk.
Note. Days 9 and 10 are necessary due to extremely complicated procedure of getting permission for transferring mineralogical specimens abroad.
No of participants: The number of participants in the excursion is limited to 18 because of the seating capacity of the off-road vehicles used. Minimum number of participants is 12.
