Porgy and Bess

Porgy & Bess

Gershwin's famous musical drama concerning love and deprivation in America’s Deep South
is a popular and colourful opera. George Gershwin himself called his masterwork Porgy and Bess An American folk opera”. The story is a moving tale of the beautiful Bess, who lives a turbulent life in the poor Catfish Row district. She seeks refuge with, and comes to love, the lame beggar Porgy, after her previous lover, the gangster Crown, flees after committing a murder. He secretly returns and tries to win her back. The drug pusher Sporting Life is after Bess as well and tries to entice her away with him to a new life in New York.

The evening’s performance is a guest-performance from the Cape Town Opera. Come and hear the fantastic songs: Summertime, My man’s gone now, It ain’t necessarily so and the love duet Bess, you is my woman now.

In addition to experiencing Gerswin’s popular opera you will have the  possibility of seeing the impressive new Opera house in Oslo that was opened in April 2008. The contest for the Opera house was won by the architect firm Snøhetta AS, and the construction achieved worldwide acclaim after the opening.

There will also be a presentation of the geological and geotechnical challenges associated with the construction of the opera house, which is situated on the sea front by Oslo fjord.
